I would like to remove a fireplace that was built in a room addition and was wondering

does the roof/ceiling have to be supported before I remove it?It is not built into the wall.

  1. My question to you is why would you want to remove the fireplace.  You can easily cut the fuel supply and cover it.  If you do that, it will provide an option to use it down the road for either you or the next owner of the house.

    Now back to your original question, most building department will not allow any structure to bear on the fireplace flue.  That being said, it really depends on how old your current house is.  You may want to do a little investigating before you start jack hammering.  If you find the structure actually being supported by the masonry flue, then you will need to shore them appropriately and tie them back to the foundation.  In this case, it is not something that you should do yourself.  Again, I recommend that you try to work around the fireplace and leave it where it is.


  2. If its not built into the wall, you would just have to close the chimney hole. Unless some part of it is holding up your roof.

    Also if it is a gas fireplace, you will have to get a certified gas fitter to remove and cap the gas pipe. If its electrical you will need an electrician to remove the wires and cap the junction box.
