I would like to replace our inground pool light.?

The pool and light are 23 years old. I have pulled the light fixture from the niche of the pool. The old fixture looks risky for putting back into the niche. Can I replace the fixture without having to drain the pool. How is the power cord sealed within the old fixture ? How could I seal the cord to be water tight inside a replacement fixture ? Thanks.

  1. the light fixture/cord comes as a pre-assembled unit.  The cord goes to a junction box usually 18" above the ground but in the deck on older pools...I usually use a "snake" to fish the cord through conduit but you could cut the light from cord and use old cord to pull new cord to the junction box....make sure to leave enough cord so light can be brought to the surface to change bulb...

  2. If you installed a stout cord onto the cord before you pulled it out you don't need a fish to install it.

Measure the length of your existing cord then buy one that long or greater.  Pool lights have bulkhead waterproof fittings for the cord and have to be installed that way.  NO SPLICES IN LIGHT CORD ALLOWED.  Except in the junction box.

Pay particular attention to setting the pool light on the deck then pull the cord through to the junction box leaving the light on the deck!

Wind up excess cord around light and install in niche.  You don't have to drain the pool but you will get wet lay on the deck and install the light with a swim mask or goggles on to see better.

    You're welcome!!
