  1. The best answer for this question is, the use of a generator to connect into your breaker panel for power outages. Battery power can be used for some house hold uses like a sump pumps. The problem is you would need a large bank of batteries to complete what you are wanting to do. You can purchase a generator breaker panel that connects into your house breaker panel, this panel will supply power to only the appliances that you want to run off of back up power, the beauty of this is when the power comes back on it automatically shuts down the back up power source.

    The breaker panel runs about 250.00 and a generator ranges from 350-600 dollars depending on the wattage rating.

  2. Yup.. a genny & a transfer switch are the way to go.   A battery/inverter system big enough to do what you want would be huge & very expensive.  Then there's the other downside...  what do you do when the batteries run out?  You can always go get more gas or diesel.
