I've heard many stories about DR.Good and Bad. Can anyone give me advice on relocating to DR. I'm from US and I want to start a new life in DR, cause all my friends have traveled there and loved it there. Will I struggle living there alone. I have no family or friends there. I know very little Spanish. If there is anyone that has relocated there, please give me some info. As a first timer where is the best place to move to.

  2. hey i understand what you have been through it has been a year since ive been to dr but its a wonderfull place it gets bad in some occasions but you can enjoy every minute of dr/ i know that it hard becuz you dont know that much spanish but it all turns out well becuz some people do know english  and if you go u should stay in hotel Babbaro that place is so amazing and i know that ur going to enjoy it. Good Luck

  3. As an individual who made the move to the DR a few years ago I can only suggest you be very careful.  A few expressions come to mind:  All the pirates never left the Caribbean.”      Ã¢Â€ÂœAll the sharks aren’t in the sea.”  Ã¢Â€ÂœSunny places attract shady people.”   “Dominicans will take you for pesos; it’s your kind of people, the Americans, Canadians, Brits and other Europeans who will take you for the big bucks. Whenever there’s a new guy in town. You will be approached by all kinds of people wanting to be your friend.  Do not, I repeat DO NOT trust anyone.  Not the lawyers, not the real estate agents. Most are just out to separate you from your dollars and will say anything to be your closest confidante.  It’s a country full of more than its share of shysters.  On the other hand it can be a beautiful place to live.   Dominicans are gracious and very nice however be leery about romantic relationships, sank-pankis are gigolos who live off gringas. Since you speak no Spanish I would suggest a place like Sosúa where there is a large ex-Pat population who once you make sincere friends will be able to help you settle in.  Choose your neighborhood carefully you want to be sure there is good security.  If you need to work, good jobs are extremely difficult to find especially if you aren’t bi-lingual.  If you wish email me and I’ll try to offer a little more insight. Please careful, it’s very different to vacation in paradise, quite another to live there.

  4. In my humble opinion its worth looking at a REAL place to live in the dr. I certainly dont profess to be an expert, being an Englishman, and infact the other week whilst entering the country on a charter, I was unlucky enough to over hear a REAL experienced chap talking a load of twaddle to a couple of gullable tourists which made me cringe.

Bottom line... Puerta Plata. Still reasonable, growing fast, good links and the people are great. how old are you ?

  5. The ABSOLUTE best place for you to get information about DR is DR1.com. I planned a trip to D.R.  last year and spent the entire time on that site. They will tell you every and anything you need to know and they also have a forum dedicated to people who want to move to D.R. .

By the way? Have you ever visited the country? I think that should be your first step if you have not. You will also need to learn more Spanish if you plan on living there. Go to DR1.com and they will guide you. Be warned. Some posters can be fierce, so don't take negative comments to heart. Good luck!
