  1. whatever you decide i am sure you will enjoy it,  wish i had your courage to do this as i cant drive either,

  2. You better plan your trip a long time before coming to the south, because it's gonna be packed as usual.......

Otherwise..........there are train station every where along the coast, but not very close to the see !!

It depends on what you're looking for...........marseille is a big city next to the sea.

And la provence, it's just about countryside, tracking and so on.

    It's up to u !!!

  3. Hi

SOuth of France is lovely area, hot / hot/ hot and busy.. but lovely. The places vary such a lot from the busy resorts on the coast to the mountain rural villages in the furtehr north.

Transport will be a determining factor since you cannot drive. So my suggestion would be to check out the trains on www.raileurope.co.uk and build your holiday around that.

  4. Marseille is quite beautiful, but not as intensely beautiful and relaxing as Provence.  There you will smell lavender drink their wine and taste all their fresh produce.  There are also markets where you can buy local art and clothes, it's really amazing. Good luck wherever you go, but make sure to eat the cheese it's amazing! and of course Pastis, a alcoholic drink you mix with water that tasts like anise.

  5. Is Marseille no longer located in Provence?

For a visit to the south of France, I would recommend staying in a city that's located on the rail line and make day trips to the various areas you want to see.  For instance, you can find lodging in Avignon, Nimes, or Arles, and then just hop on the train to go to Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, and the many other wonderful places to experience.

We stayed in Arles and did this.  When we visited Avignon and Nimes, we wished we had made one of those two beautiful cities our base.  Arles is interesting with its Roman ruins and medieval streets, but the vibe was a little different.

I highly recommend a visit to Marseille, but I wouldn't recommend making it your base.

And to Pauline: GO!  You don't have to drive.  The only thing we needed a car to see was Pont du Gard, other than that, we used public transportation (trains and city buses) and our feet to get around.

    Bon voyage !

  6. Marseille is in the Provence , rent a car there and drive up to Aix en Provence where you could stay in a B&B

    Have fun!!!

  7. Aix-en-Provence is a wonderful town, and small enough that you can walk across town easily. It has excellent bus service, a gare routiere (bus station) and SNCF train station so you can take side trips, and great restaurants.

From Aix I've taken day trips by bus or train to Avignon, Marseilles and Arles.
