I would like to stay in Australia for 3 months. Are there long term homes available (about $1000/-per month)?

It should be good if its in a housing estate, near towns and basics facilities like shops and deli, supermarkets and the like because I am a retiree.

$1000 a month is not very realistic if you want to live in a nice area near the city. Alot of good areas have their own malls, supermarkets e.t.c.... States vary so do your research. $280-$320 should get you a nice little flat with 1 or 2 rooms. Really depends on where you want to live. Oh and home prices, rates, rentals are big issues here at the moment- look it up.

I would try a serviced apartment which are available in all big cities.  The longer you want to stay the cheaper the price.  You can probably negotiate a reasonable deal for 3 months (especially if the 3 months is not over Christmas or school holidays).  There is a bit of a rental shortage here at the moment, no-one would want a 3 month lessee and houses are not usually furnished.

My other suggestion would be to try and be a house-sitter (there are house sitting agencies here) if you don't mind tending people's gardens and looking after their pets (rent free after you pay a joining up fee).

Australia is a very large country with 6 states and 2 territories and too many cities to count. Each state has accommodation available at varying prices, however, some cities are presently experiencing a rental crisis with properties very difficult to find within your price range.
