  1. Talk to your insurance agent before you leave, they have

no concept of driving laws there.

Be prepared to be pulled ouer and shaken down for

    money by the Mexican police.

  2. It is safe.

I'm mexican, in this area is very popular to go to San Antonio driving, on vacation or for shopping, specially to San Marcos Outlet. I've been there. It is very easy and safe.

If you are interested on a vacation driving tour from San Antonio, it could be a good idea to come in one route and get back another. Let me explain:

To come, drive to Laredo, cross to Nuevo Laredo and to Monterrey. Then: Mty-Saltillo-Matehuala-San Luis Potosí-San Miguel de Allende-Querétaro. And going back:Querétaro-Guanajuato-León-Aguascali... - Zacatecas - Saltillo-Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo-San Antonio.

The specific points of interest may depend on how many time you have to stay here. In this tour you could visit some archeological sites, colonial towns, tequila factories, national parks, historic sites, modern malls; if you come on april you could go to La Feria Nacional de San Marcos at Aguascalientes, the most importan fair in México (not the american kind, here we have casino, bullfighting, industrial and cattle (dairy mainly) expos, nigthlife (really wild), cultural activities (theater, music concerts and more), the special guest this year is Spain, so there will be many interesting activities about spain. Aguascalientes is about 10 hours driving to San Antonio, only you must keep on mind that the Mexican Federal Highway 70 (wich connects Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí) is under construction to improve it, so, you could go to San Luis and visit Guanajuato state (Guanajuato city, León, San Miguel de Allende) and later go back to Aguascalientes using Mx Highway 45, and go back to San Antonio by Zacatecas (the tour I suggested).

Well, that is enough. If have any other question, feel free to send me an e mail; I live here, I could give you some advices about your tour.

  3. Yes, you will be fine...people that continually say you have to pay off the police have seen too many bad movies.  I have put sites below to tell you about the car permit and my favorite ins.place.  have a great trip.
