I would like to try living in Hawaii?

I have been wanting to leave my current surroundings for years. Now with the recent breakup from my BF, I feel its necessary to go on my own and challenge myself. I want to do this and I feel like I need it just to make myself stronger in that sense. Knowing I can do something so BIG alone would be so empowering. But Have you ever lived in Hawaii? How do I go about making the big move? At least just for a while to say I have done something extraordinary in my mid 20's.*

  1. First you should make sure that you have the funds. I live in hawaii and it is so expensive just to rent a house out. Almost 600 w/out utilities, and thats one of the good deals. Not to mention how small the house will be.  Most people just get roomates. My boyfriend has 4 other roomates besides him self in one house.  You should visit first just so that you can see everything for yourself and make the decision.

  2. Hope you have a good job lined up. The cost of living is about 25% higher than living in the United States. Remember, most everything you will buy over there, has been shipped from the U.S. .. so think twice, before you spend alot of money for EVERYTHING.

  3. Now is the best time to do it. You need to be prepared though.

Housing costs with utilities for a shared apartment will be about $1000/month. Food will be around $500/month, then of course, transportation, $40 to whatever you want to spend.

Coming out for a week or two and trying to get a job is a good way to do it. Make sure that your resume looks good, have at least 2 or 3 people look at it and send you feedback. Send it to me if you want comments.

You will pretty much have to make $35,000 just to survive. It's doable, but depends a lot on what kind of education and experience you have. You wouldn't want to go into a retail job unless you had someone else to help out. They tend to max out at about $15/hour, so you just get by, barely.

You can do it, if you want to. Look at some of the job boards and see what you may qualify for. Email me if you need more ideas or have questions. Good luck.

  4. I lived on Maui for 5 months but I was with 5 other friends and we we're living at my friends sister's house. So i don't know what rent is like but im assuming its pretty expensive. If you really are thinking about moving to Hawaii I'd say save at least a couple thousand dollars, find a place that you can rent a room so you can make some friends and have them show you around it will make things alot easier. I haven't been back ever since but i've been dreaming about going back there alone and just live like a bum in paradise for like a month or two, travelling around the island, sleeping on deserted beaches, camping,  drinking with the locals at bars, and capturing stunning pictures of different landscapes. Ahh!!!! Makes me want to go back. Well good luck to you and I hope everything works out just fine.

  5. Okay, Hawaii IS part of the United States. Lets all remember that:-P

It is a hard place to move to as it is expensive. I grew up here so for me it's just normal, but some people really struggle with it.

What I would recommend you do is come for a visit (a  couple of weeks) and schedule some interviews in your field for that time. Once you secure a position, the move isn't too bad. Keep an eye on honolulu.craigslist.com to find apartments and such.
