I have a point-and-shoot digital camera, but would like to upgrade. On a new camera, I am looking for a great zoom. I understand that I can always upgrade a lense, but I would like to get the best bang for my buck. I would also like to get rid of pixely pictures - and have better image stabilization. I would like to be able to take action shots, and pictures of lights in the city at night. On my digital, pictures of lights in the city come up as a blur. Is there any important information I should know before starting my search? I am using cnet as a reference. Is there a camera model that is most recommended? I would like to stay under $1,000, but any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  1. If you want an SLR with zoom, you will need to buy a zoom lens. Canon has a very large collection of EF lenses that work with all of their EOS DSLRs.

3 basic lenses that you should have:

    A zoom or telephoto lens

    A Wide angle lens

    A macro/closeup lens

I recommend the Canon XTi or the XSi. They are both great cameras with incredible image quality.

If you want to take action shots, you're better off getting a fast lens, such as a f2.8 or better.

A tripod is pretty essential for night shots.

If you're really into photography, why not take a photography class? You can probably find one at your local community college. If it's not in your budget, there are endless internet sources that will teach you just about any photographic technique you want to learn.

And yes, "requires lens" means that the lens is not included, and you'll have to buy one.

  2. my best choice would be anywhere in the nikon department, I got a nikon d40 a few months ago and the pictures i've taken are beautiful, but you can also get the nikon d80 it takes way better photos than the d40 and only cost 800 dollars

    the d40 cost 500 dollars.

both cameras are very durable and can withstand a fall, but never drop them, things such as the flash and lens are VERY sensitive, and can be broken easily. both cameras have numerous accessories so dont worry about being limited.

quality with the nikon is no biggie, the clearness of pictures is very well noticed, every detail comes out.

  3. When I was shopping for my last camera, I found the Steve's-digicams reviews to be really helpful.

He reviews tons of cameras & has a best value list that might help you decide.
