I would like to visit the US Open (tennis) this summer. What days are fun to visit without breaking the bank?

I have never been before and would like to take my wife this Summer. I'm looking for personal opinions on the overall experience and what a typical day is like at the open. Is it easy to see stars practicing? Is it a fair-like atmosphere? Thanks!
