I love animals and have some time on my hands. I cannot think of a better way to spend it then by giving back. Anyhow, I am really unsure if simply walking into an animal shelter and telling them I want to volunteer is the right to go about it. I do not want them to be wary of me. What should I do?

  1. Check out their websites, or make phone calls, or go in person. Bring a list of references with you, they can check you out for themselves. I think that's great that you want to help!

  2. Check the local shelter's website. Most will have information on volunteering or at least a contact person to call.

  3. To learn about volunteer opportunities with your local animal protection organizations, I suggest you check the Yellow Pages under the headings "animal shelter," "humane society," and "animal control," or just call Information. You will need to contact each group directly to learn about volunteer needs and opportunities.

  4. I dont know for sure but I would love to do the same thing too.

  5. Not that I have ever done it

but the first thing that came to mind when I read your question was to walk in and ask,

if you think your going to come across as creepy then call ahead and ask if they have any volunteer programs, then set up a time and date to meet with them

  6. Tell them exactly what you wrote above.. Call them and explain that you have extra time and Love animals and  would like to volunteer with the animals. They will tell you to come in and fill out an application. I'm sure they'll talk to you and ask you questions and hopefully see you're sincere about your intentions.

    Good Luck
