Question:

I would like to work in the hospital in the labor and delivery what would i need to be? a LVN or a RN?

so im not really sure what i would need to be a nurse in the hospital in the labor and delivery like the nurses who help the mommy after the baby is born and they also help with the baby what would i need to be like a RN or a LVN OR something else please help!

  1. Hospitals in many areas are steering away from hiring LVNs, and if they do they are mostly on floors where the client is most stable, and the least acute.

    I would recommend becoming a RN because of the limited scope of practice for the LVN.


  2. You will not be able to be a L&D nurse unless you are an RN. LVN/LPNs are sometimes hired into more of a nursing assistant capacity in some birth centers, but generally not within the L&D area, more likely working with the postpartum mothers and infants.

    Most larger hospitals these days are steering towards only hiring RNs. By getting your RN so many more opportunities are available to you. It's worth the extra year or two of school.
