My husband and I want to go somewhere exotic this summer. I have been looking at Costa Rica and it looks beautiful and very interesting. Do any of you know where I can get a good package deal? We want to stay 6-8 days for as inexpensive as possible.

Thank you!

  1. I think you would enjoy La Fortuna because you could see the Arenal volcano explode and even visit the rainforest. Don't go too deep in so you don't have to hike.

Also, visit Playa Conchal, a very beautiful beach.

You can ask a local fisherman to take you fishing for a fee. It is SO fun! I did it in Tamarindo

  2. id suggest 4 nights at a beach resort town like Manuel Antonio and then 3 nights in La Fortuna, the closest town to Arenal Volcano.

  3. Make up your own package!  (Fly "Sansa Air" in CR!) - cheapest way to go!

Fly down to San Jose, Cr - stay at the Hotel Del Rey in downtown San Jose.  Ask for Edgar who is in charge of Reservations  and tell him "Paul B" told you to contact him and get a map of Costa Rica.  Check out Quepos on the Pacific Side by staying at the Hotel Kamuck in town $50.00 /night First class - take a cab to Antonio Manuel Park just four miles south of Quepos for a fantastic view of the Pacific and Beach with great Resturant right on the North Beach! - then take Sansa Air from Quepos to Tamarindo Beach staying at the Hotel Diria $50.00/night First Class right on the Beach - then return to San Jose to return to States.

If you send an E-mail to - earl@dukeof earls.com -  tell him Paul B told you to contact him.  He is a professional guide out of San Jose - and will  drive you anywhere you want to go!  He has a Van and can pick you up from the air port and take you to your hotel.

While in San Jose you can have earl take you to the Restuarant "Tiquicia" in Escazu just south of San Jose where you will be up in the mountains about 4,000 feet higher than the central plain and see the billions of lights in the Central Valley below that is absolutely awesome!  Top Drinks! food!  view!  I took a friend and four others there for his birthday party, had a "First Class" feast, drinks, etc and check this out! I pickup the tab for the whole affair and my bill came to $42.00 USD!!!! I gave the waiter a $10.00 bill for his tip - and he told me it was too much!

If you enjoy the Costa Rican coffee - you can buy it at their grocery stores for as little as $2.75 a pound!!!!!!!!  I usually bring about 20 bags back with me and it is the best tasting coffee in the World.

If you go to San Jose around the 4th of July - take in the American celebration of the 4th at the Imperial Cevesseria which is the Imperial Beer Park.  I will be there wearing my - IMPEACH THE BA$TARD tee shirt with a huge crowd of people around me raving and cheering my shirt!

Imperial Beer together with its new beer - Imperial Light has to be the best tasting beer in the world!

Enjoy and have a great trip!

    Viva La Pura Vida!

  4. There are so many hotels that are open and waiting for business, there are more open rooms than you can imagine.  I would just fly here and not get a "package deal"  It helps if you speak some spanish.  Go to San Jose for one day.. stay at a place in the Central area, you can take a taxi to the central part from the airport for about 15 USD.. from there stay at a place called Morazon.. this is a seedy joint, but it is clean and about 35 bucks a night.  They have a web site and you may need to make a reservation for this.  From there I would head south.  You can take a bus (MUSOC) you can ask any taxi driver to take you to the station.  It will cost you about 4 bucks per person to go to a town called San Isidro de General.  The bus leaves every hour on the half hour starting from 5:30 in the morning to 5:30 at night.. somtimes they have a bus at 6:30 on  Sunday) this bus goes back and forth between these two towns. You go over a really high mountian pass, and it is quite beautiful to look out the windows, it is safe and you are with local people so you see alot of things you would not normaly see.  You get to San Isidro in about 3 hours.. the town is nice, growing, but still quaint.  There are shops, bars and things to see and do.. I would stay there one day and one night, from there go to Dominical Beach, you can take a bus from San Isidro to Dominical.  It should cost you about 1.50 USD for a ticket.  They leave (i think) at 7, 11 and 4:30 this bus can be crowded and hot, so it is best to get a ticket early so you have a seat.  It is about 25k to Dominical.  Somtimes it takes 1.5 hours, sometimes it can take 3, but you also go over another mountian pass, pass through some nice towns and end up on the Pacific Coast.  Stay a few days in Dominical.  It is cheap (can find rooms for 10 bucks a night) just ask around.  From there go North to a city caled Quepos.  You can leave Dominical and go to Quepos.  I warn you on this bus, it is safe, but it is 35k or so of pure dirt road, passing through Palm Oil farms, stuff like that.  It is hot and a hard ride, but it can also be fun if you are adventerous.  I think that bus leaves at 5:30 in the morning... I would take that bus becasue it is cooler and you get into Quepos early.  Get a room in Quepos... Again there are lots of places to stay for cheap...ask around.  The same place the bus drops you off (the end of the line so you wont get confused) you can walk aound Quepos for a day then take a bus (from the same station you got off of) to Manual Antonio, this is about a 30 minute ride from Quepos.  They have lots of thigs to see there, a National Park, nice beach and lots of people to watch.  It is a tourist trap, but it is very beautiful.  From Quepos, take a bus to San Jose...or to Jaco... It is on the way back to San Jose ...Jaco of you have more time.. another beach town, more touristy than Domical but fun...lots of shops, beach and people to see.  Then head back to San Jose.  This is a nice trip, easy to do, safe and it shoud take you 6 to 8 days...good luck..

  5. hi, I've been to Costa twice now and I would have to recommend not getting a package deal... my reasons being you will most likely spend more $, spend more time in your resort or tour bus or tour group than you will relaxing and talking with the locals or experiencing the jungle or snorkeling (all things you don't need a guide for or dish out a lot of loot for.) try a place called tortuguero, you'll be able to watch sea turtles lay their eggs, take a terrific boat ride up a canal and see birds in the hundreds. a must do in a costa rica! great travels pura vida!
