I would love to have a tropical themed bedroom someday?

Currently, my fiance' and I live in an apartment, so we are limited on decorating (not allowed to paint walls or created any major holes in the walls, etc). But I would still love to have some ideas for having a tropical themed bedroom for when we get a house in the future. I don't want to have flowers and palm trees painted on the walls, but I would like it to have a tropical feel. Maybe having the room look like the inside of a little tropical get-a-way cabin. I remember seeing some home-design show (I think it was While You Were Out) where they did a tropical themed bedroom by making the windows shuttered, wood floors, light colored walls, etc.

Anyone have any ideas? Or if you were able to find the link to that particular show, I will give you best answer.

  2. Keep it simple, think Ernest Hemingway or island cabana look. Crisp white linens, gauzy white drapes or bamboo shades. Don't get cheesy with palm print bedspread or wall paper. Wicker or rattan pieces can help create that look too.

Of course its up to you, but I'm all about regional design, like my Friend's mom has a really overly done tropical look bedroom and she lives in suburban Minnesota. I'm sure you don't see a lot of North Woods rec rooms with loons and moose in south Florida?

You can get the beachy-island look without looking like the set of the Golden Girls

  3. I used this company to order some wall transfers for my brothers beach place. I think they would be perfect for you because they are removable so you would not have to paint but they look painted on. They are a great way to add style without all the work and mess. I have a few of them in my house too.

    Good Luck!

  4. Sandy, subtle accent carpets add a tropical feel to the room. Try placing some artistically under a table or next to a bed.

Long, breezy, flowy curtains give an airy, open outside feeling. Bonus points if they're made out of sheer white, crinkly fabric.

Light, honey-colored wood furniture hints an exotic feel, and woven wood outdoor chairs and tables enhance it.

Pictures and prints of your dream island to decorate the walls will push this tropical look further. Woven rugs pull together the look with white furniture.

Hope I helped, and good luck.

  5. I'm sorry I don't know that episode, but I certainly have some cute ideas.

Like you said, light oak / wooden flooring

You can have a fake fruit basket on some corners

    Straw bed skirt

A wooden chair decorated in pin flowers

    A flowered light stwitch cover

You can find rugs that are islandish

    Maybe light green walls

    Framed pictures of an island

A stand lamp that is shaped like a palm tree

    Things like that [:

  6. go to Rona.ca which will give you lots of ideas, colours, accessorising tips...I didn't look closely but some big hardware stores give programs that allow you to try out diff. colours on their web site.

  7. i saw this fan at lowes home improvement that just feels tropical. if u get that, and like white or tan walls wood floors and trim, and a bright tropical bedspread, then it would work wonderfully.
