I am so curious to know what the Chinese eat for breakfast and what they call the food items in their country. And is there a certain food item or dish one should try when visiting China?

  1. If you have the opportunity, you should try going to a "dim sum" for breakfast.  You sit at a table, and they waiters bring different carts around the restaurant - each cart has different stuff on it, so you can pick out what you want to eat.  There's stuff like dumplings, baked buns, even desserts.  I have no idea what some of the food is called.  But it's delicious - and fun.  If you can, go with a big group of people, that way you can share more stuff.

  2. it depends on the region and place in china. people in sichuan guangdong and other places serve different food for breakfast.

on the weekends, they go and eat dim sum and they have so many different food in carts rolling around the restaurant. some of the populars ones are like pai gwat (marinated pork) siu mai(meat dumpling) ha gow (shrimp dumpling) and etc. they also have egg tart baked buns steamed buns and etc.

sometimes they eat congee which is rice porridge( juk)

im chinese and i eat what other people eat like cereal waffles and etc.

  3. it definitly depends on what part of China you're in as to what they'll serve. I think dim sum is more common in Hong Kong and northern cities in China but however you can still find some dumplings in other cities. I've never eaten congee for breakfast as we usually eat that for dinner but one really common breakfast item where we live is yu tiao (fried bread sticks) and we like to dip it in warm soya milk or the more popular yogurt drinks (also warmed). In our city (we live in the Shaanxi province), I always eat three different things during the week. One is a soup with yellow beans, tofu, and cilantro; another is this square wrap that is made out of eggs and flour, with crispy fried dough in the center and also spices and green onion (all wrapped in the egg and flour mixture); and last is meat on a bun (bbq pork in either a soft or fried bun, I like the fried ones). My mother in law makes noodles for breakfast every day and fries egg with vinegar and celery.

if you're going to visit I suggest two things: one visit the food vendors during the three times a day that they are out in certain parts of the city (it's very cheap and an easy way to try a few things at once and don't be afraid to try things that smell bad, stinky tofu is absolutely delicious) and two: try the cuisine that that specific city is noted for (if you look it up online you can usually find the best dishes each city has to offer).

  4. chinese go yum cha in the morning. "drink tea" is what it's called. you eat little dim sum or "little pieces of heart". some eat porridge and pai gwot fan. ribs with rice. go eat dessert when you're in china.

  5. A traditional chinese breakfast is a bowl of rice or as someone else said congee sometimes called jook . But China is a huge place and there are regional differences. Some places breakfast would be cold meat and bread.

  6. chinese omellets

  7. It really depends where in China you're going to be at. Usually, rice porridge or congee is a pretty traditional breakfast. There are different kinds of congee, of course, ranging from a classic chicken and century egg congee to a mixed seafood congee. This is more "upscale" so to speak, because in a more plebeian setting, you would have just plain congee with assorted side dishes with it, like pickled bamboo shoots in chili oil, fermented tofu (sort of like Chinese blue cheese), fried eggs with salted vegetables, salted eggs, pickled vegetables, a fried doughnut called "youtiao" etc. You can find most of these ingredients at any Asian food store, and you can just ask someone to recommend something to go with "xi fan", which is Congee in Mandarin.

  8. Egg Mcmuffin is #1 in China.  Expensive !

  9. Congee aka rice porridge
