I love to play defensive style and waiting for my opponent to make mistake and launch a counter attack. Any tips for my style of play.

  1. dont vary from what you are comfortable doing, trying to change mid-competition will s***w your game up horribly.

  2. you can't always wait. sometimes you need to be offensive

  3. Playing defensively might keep you alive in the lower class ratings like class D and below, but if you're looking to get better and start climbing the ranks, you have to play attacking chess from the word go. Just about every chess instructor tries to instill the importance of initiative and aggression in chess as its the best way to really improve your game.

At 1200, I was very defensive and played passively. I ended up getting crushed a lot of games. Now that I'm closing in on 1800, I look for any attacking chance I can get to grab or maintain the initiative as my opponents will be doing the same.

So basically, if you're playing the lower club ranks, you may be ok playing defensively, but it won't hold up against stronger players.

  4. There is no spoon.

  5. i really suck at chess but GOOD LUCK!!

  6. hmm... in the rules of chess "Defense is the absolute offense" but i suggest you try to see what your opponent is doing because a head strong offense can really tear your army apart another is that good defensive styles of play can take a lot of time before you establish it, here's what you do if youre opponent plays defensively, either you also play defensively or try and s******g him off... but if your opponent plays offensively then i suggest you sprinkle your eyes with lots of water, mistakes can be very devastating to your game... hope that helps

  7. I have never played in a chess competition before but I would tell you to play whatever is comfortable to your style of play. On the other hand you could opt out of the tournament and the game of chess altogether, it is always your choice to make. Chess is a game of strategy so if you want to play defense that may work well against a more offensive set player but against a defensive player that may be more of a stalemate. I don't know if it is a bit precarious but many people try to get the king protected asap, by either castling or barracading him in with pawns and other pieces first.

  8. your style of play is good because most people go offensivly (like me) so stick to your strategy because you dont want to take your luck on a new one.

also about the tournament dont get nervous i went to a tournament to give my friend so moral support and i played a match before the tournament started and he lost to me... hes way better then me the reason he lost was because he was really nervous.

so be calm at the tournament i suggest to get a stick of gum and just chew it for like 10 minutes before any matches.
