I wouldn’t consider myself a slow player, says Shaun Murphy – Snooker Update
Former World Snooker Championship winner, England’s Shaun Murphy is all set to face challenges of the new snooker season. He had a tremendous snooker season finish last year as he reached the advance stages of many snooker events. He has an average playing
style but many critics consider him a slow player.
However, he thinks the otherwise because he believes he has performed convincingly in the fast formatted tournaments like Snooker Shootout.
He spoke to Pro Snooker Bog, “There are definitely players in it who the clock will suit more than most and there are others who might struggle in it. I struggled in it when I first played in it and I wouldn’t consider myself a slow player.”
He added, “I got used to it after a couple of years and now really enjoy it. 25 seconds isn’t that quick, the trick is to just realise you can play your normal game and be alright. The Shoot Out is a bit more severe with the 15 seconds for the last five
minutes.”
For many years, the game of snooker was considered a slow and boring game which was the basic reason many people, especially the youngsters, did not watch the game nor were interested in playing. The game was indeed quite slow patterned and the players also
used to take time while executing their shots.
There were some players who played fast but the rest of the potters had slow nature of potting which made the sport look boring.
However, the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) made some drastic changes in the playing format of different snooker events.
They devised a certain shot clock for the potters to play the shot. Besides, the association also introduced some new snooker events based on fast playing format.
These new fast formatted snooker tournaments include the Snooker Shootout and Power Snooker where the player is given a specific time to play his shot. These new events and some changes made to the format of existing snooker tournaments played an important
role in reviving the game.
Now the sport is one of the most watches and highly progressed games of the world. Right now, snooker is played around the world and snooker bodies arrange tournaments locally and internationally.
