There was insuffient funds in my account when they tried to collect the money at first, so i was charged $30 by my bank. then the gas station tried to collect the money the second time, the check actually cleared. After three days the gas station went back to charge my account and charge me $30 for the first attempt of insuffient funds after the check had been cleared on the secound trail. Can they do that? after the check has been paid though.

  1. Yes, most companies do have polices that they will charge you for writing a bad chq.  What I do not understand is how your bank gave them the funds.  You did not write a 2nd chq.  for this amount, and had not provided them with authorization to do this.

Yes they are entitled to the fee, but you should have an issue with your bank for transferring the funds without authorization.  Sounds like the gas station, just tried to do funds transfer claiming you OK'ed it.

  2. Yes - when the check 'bounced' they got charged AS WELL as you .. so all they are doing is recouping their costs ..

  3. Yup.. they can try to collect funds as many times as they want till they get their money.

    Don't write bad checks!

  4. Would you prefer that they prosecute you?

  5. Most places of business that accept checks have postings stating that there will be a fine charged to your account for bad checks.  $30 sounds about right.

  6. yes they can
