I wrote my car off yesterday - do I have to tell my insurance company?

The car is only worth £200 and I have 15 years no claims so financially it isnt worth what I will have to pay extra on my insurance....

I just wanted to know if by law I have to let them know, nobody else was involved so I wont incur cost there...

  1. i work for a brokers, and no, providing noone else was involved, you do not need to declare it to your insurers. just ring them up when you change your car and ask to do a change of vehicle.

  2. It depends what else you damaged - bear in mind that unless it was done on your own property or that of someone you know, your insurance company may face a claim for damage to road surface, signs, fences, etc by landowners or the local council.

If there's no damage at all, then yes, scrap the car & say nothing.

  3. If there was no other vehicle you caused damage to, scrap the car.  If you are replacing it, transfer the policy.  However, if there was a ticket issued by the investigating constabulary, your insurance company will find out and it will go on your record even with no claim.

  4. I'm not sure of the legal requirements here but as a rule, you should advise your insurers of this.  If the accident involved another car whose owner will be contacting their insurers then DEFINITELY let your insurance company know.  If they find out from a third party, you could be in trouble.

  5. Scrap the car, if there is no claim against you, tell the DVLA and tell the insurance that you have scrapped the car.

  6. No, just tell them you have scrapped the car and to close the policy and refund for remaining policy time paid for. (or just leave the policy intact to be transferred accross to your next car}.
