All the hotels are beachfront.  I would definitely recommend staying in an all inclusive.  We stayed at a resort that all the alcohol was included. So that was real fun.  It also depends why you are there and your age.  The bus system runs 24 hrs and it goes up and down the hotel zone to downtown.  So it doesn't really matter if you are close to downtown, because it is still convenient.  suggestions- bring sunblock. if you rent a car rent from the airport or your hotel or a known agency.  When we went we used cancuncar.com and they are a scam. We just went to cancun, and loved it.  So have a good time.
