IAAF confirms broadcasting deal with Eurosport for Athletics Championships 2011 and 2013
The International Association of Athletics Federation was rightfully pleased to announce another Pan-European broadcasting deal with Eurosport, for the live coverage of the IAAF World Athletics Championships in 2011 and 2013.
The deal, brokered by IEC in Sports, which is a media rights agency of the IAAF for the entire Europe and Africa, is expected to broadcast at least 100 active hours of coverage for a vast viewership in Europe. Just like the previous World Championships 2009
held in Berlin, the agreement will cover both the Daegu (2011) and Moscow events (2013).
Interestingly, besides the two global events, the deal also includes coverage rights for next year’s IAAF World Indoor Championships to be held in Turkey’s capital city, Istanbul. Other important tournaments to be aired include the World Junior, World Youth,
Cross Country and the World Half Marathon Championships. The Indoor championships in Istanbul will kick-off in the second week of March, 2012.
The deal, which has offered a favourable situation for both parties, has not only handed Eurosport with an impressive business opportunity, but by offering a technically sound broadcasting to a wide viewership, it will also address the IAAF’s primary goal
of promoting athletics worldwide.
Eurosport, without question, has a wide viewership around the European continent and rightly possess the vast experience which was a prerequisite to air such a global event with the right acumen. In order to approach more and more athletics fans, the broadcasting
company will also be providing live streaming via mobile phones and internet.
A long standing partner of the international athletics body, Eurosport, which is Europe’s leading media group and a top rated Pan-European channel, will be broadcasting the coverage in 20 different languages for over 125 million households in 59 countries
across the globe. In order to offer diversity for the 32 disciplines of athletics, the channel will provide live coverage on Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2.
To reach every single territory of Europe and other countries around the globe, the media group will also be airing the broadcast from platforms like Eurosport HD, Eurosport 2 HD, along with eurosport.com.
Commenting upon the deal, Lamine Diack, president of the IAAF said, “This deal is excellent news for the IAAF as there are now broadcasting agreements in place covering more than 100 territories throughout 40 different deals in Europe and Africa. I am also
delighted that our agency IEC in Sports has ensured a strong combination of terrestrial free to air and satellite in most territories.”
Sharing somewhat similar thoughts, CEO of IEC in sports, Jonas Persson said that they were also pleased to conclude the deal with Eurosport. To him, this in time deal will also display a strong commitment towards a wider broadcast of the entire event in
Daegu.
