IAAF shortlists candidates for the World ‘Athlete of the Year’ award – Athletics news
The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) – the body that looks after athletics matter at international level, has announced the names of men and women athletes which have been shortlisted for the 2011 world ‘Athlete of the Year’ award.
According to information released by IAAF, the world athletics body has nominated ten men and ten women athletes for the prestigious award. These top-20 athletes have been selected after thorough scrutiny of their profiles and performances during the last
year by a panel of eight athletics experts from the IAAF. Now, in order to decide upon the final winners for the prestigious award, an e-mail poll will begin today, October 3 and close on Sunday, October 23. The e-mail poll will allow the world athletics family
to cast their votes in favour of their favourite performer throughout the year.
With the poll concluding on October 23 at midnight, the IAAF committee will announce the names of three male and three female finalists. From these six athletes, the council of the International Athletics Foundation will select the final winners of the award
and will announce their name live at the World Athletics Gala to be held on November 12, 2011.
The names of top-20 athletes (ten from men and 10 from women) that have been shortlisted by the IAAF, have been mentioned below. Athletics spectators will still have to wait for another month to see which athlete will steal the award.
The shortlisted athletes among men are comprised of Yohan Blake from Jamaica, Usain Bolt from Jamaica, Mo Farah from Great Britain, Robert Harting from Germany, Kirani James from, Grenada, Patrick Makau from Kenya, Koji Murofushi from Japan, David Rudisha
from Kenya, Christian Taylor and Jesse Williams from USA.
Women athletes who have succeeded in earning a place among the top-ten of the year are Maria Abakumova from Russia, Valerie Adams from New Zealand, Veronica Campbell Brown from Jamaica, Tatyana Chernova from Russia, Vivian Cheruiyot from Kenya, Anna Chicherova
from Russia, Lashinda Demus from USA, Carmelita Jeter from USA, Amantle Montsho from Botswana and Sally Pearson from Australia.
