IAAF signs an agreement with UK Anti-Doping to share Athlete Biological Passport data
With the sole purpose of containing the athletes from using banned substances (power boosters), the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) has signed an agreement with the UK Anti-Doping Agency to join hands against this fight.
According to the new agreement, both the agencies will be able to share Athlete Biological Passport and other relevant information necessary to trace an athlete’s health history to trace out any doping affects.
Lately, despite the imposition of stringent conditions and serving the athletes with life-time bans from athletics, the players have constantly been found using power boosting drugs.
The latest attempt is to trace the usage of banned drugs at an early stage and to regularly test the athletes whose biological data comes under suspicion.
According to the experts, the Athlete Biological Passport helps in monitoring the biological variables that are helpful in detecting doping affects.
Under this programme, athletes are regularly tested and their consistency against a number of biological variables is recorded. The change in statistics over time suggests further investigation.
The agreement, which is a recent development, will help both the athletic agencies to share information on regular basis.
Commenting upon the agreement, which is deemed as a decisive step in coping with doping issues in athletics, Lamine Diack, President of the world athletic body said, “Today’s announcement of a data sharing agreement between the IAAF and the UK Anti-Doping
Agency reinforces the model of an intelligent and efficient anti-doping programme to which the IAAF is committed”.
The President regarded the new programme as historic and said that it was completely in line with IAAF’s policy to combat the usage of drugs among the players.
He said, “It is another step in our long term cooperation with the UK authorities in the fight against doping in Athletics, which becomes even more relevant in the perspective of the forthcoming Olympic Games in London. We remain unequivocal in our resolve
to eradicate doping and defend the credibility of our sport”.
The agreement between the world athletics body and the UK Anti-doping Agency is expected to strengthen the information gathering abilities of both the bodies and will prove to be a cornerstone in addressing the long standing issue that has been promoting
unfair play in athletics.
