  1. IB stands for International Baccalaureate.

    AP stands for Advanced Placement.

In a very general sense, they both require the same amount of work and commitment. Both have an assessement test that students take at the end of the year.

Both are used by colleges in the admission process.

The difference is that AP classes/test scores are (in most cases) more widely recognized and accepted (by colleges) within the United States.

IB, too, are accepted throughout the U.S., but AP classes seem to be more widely known/accepted. IB courses/tests are accepted in something like 120 countries. So if you want to go to college overseas, your classes/test score would be readily accepted at many foreign institutions.

Anyway, you're probably safe taking either one. I personally preferred AP because every college that I applied to accepted my scores and classes, while only 3 of the 4 accepted IB scores.

  2. If you want to get an IB degree, you have to take IB English. But if you're not getting an IB diploma, then it doesn't entirely matter.

FYI - more colleges recognize AP credit than IB, so it's easier to transfer AP credits into college when it comes time,  but a number of schools do accept IB credit as well.

  3. AP English, if you do well on the AP test you can get college credit. Plus it prepares you better for college than an IB class.
