ICC Awards short-list announced, Sachin Tendulkar in three categories
Sachin Tendulkar was the only cricketer nominated in all the three major categories of the ICC awards that will happen in Bangalore later this month. The short-list was announced by the International Cricket
Council on Monday. Amongst the other prominent names, Virender Sehwag, Hashim Amla and Graeme Swann were the three names in the Cricketer of the Year nominations.
Out of the aforementioned trio, Sehwag and Amla found their names in the Test cricketer of the Year category as well. Apart from the pair and Tendulkar, Dale Steyn from South Africa is also a part of the
list.
In the ODI player of the year list, two other cricketers, Ryan Harris and all-rounder Shane Watson make up the list apart from AB de Villiers and Tendulkar.
2009-10 seemed to have been one of Tendulkar’s best years in recent times, as he slammed more than 1000 runs in 10 Tests, and 914 runs in 17 ODIs. This also included the ODI cricket’s first ever double-century
that he made against a fine South African bowling attack.
Sehwag has an even better record than Tendulkar in the ensuing period between 24 August, 2009 and 10 August, 2010, the period of consideration for the awards. In the 10 Test matches that he played, he scored
1282 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 85.46, apart from scoring his runs at a strike-rate of nearly 100. He was instrumental in India winning a couple of Test matches off his own bat – including the one against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne Stadium.
The emerging player of the year category will have Umar Akmal, Steven Finn, Angelo Mathews and Tim Paine, while in the best performance in a T20I, two performances stand out - Michael Hussey’s 60* v Pakistan
in the semi-final of the ICC World T20 and Brendon McCullum unbeaten 116 against Australia in 2010.
Some of the other short-lists are as follows:
Women's Cricketer of the Year: Katherine Brunt (England), Shelley Nitschke (Australia), Ellyse Perry (Australia) and Stafanie Taylor (West Indies)
Umpire of the Year: Aleem Dar, Steve Davis, Tony Hill and Simon Taufel
Spirit of Cricket: India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe
