ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009/10 Update- Day 2, Scotland stumbles as Afghanistan’s bowlers fight-back
Scotland fought back strong on the start of the second day of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Intercontinental Cup 2010 as they wrapped up Afghanistan’s first innings when they bowled out the batsmen in just under 60
overs.
An excellent bowling effort by Matthew http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Parker-c80761 and Majid Haq helped Scotland gain a lead of 41 runs by lunch time in Dubai International Cricket Stadium, U.A.E.
Afghanistan finished the first day at 18 runs for the loss of one wicket. Opener Shabir Noor was the first victim of Parker who dismissed him as he hit 11 runs off 11 balls.
His counterpart, Karim Sadiq tried to stabilize his side as he smashed five boundaries. He was aptly supported by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mirwais-Ashraf-c1971 who also hit three boundaries. Sadiq and Ashraf found their comfort and began to embark on a confident
partnership; however Haq started his three wicket haul as he took the wicket of Ashraf when he was on 21 runs.
Richie Berrington took the third wicket of the day as Sadiq was bowled out at 34 runs off 71 balls. Mohammad Shahzad made only 10 runs as he faced 36 balls and was caught by Parker off Berrington’s over.
Afghanistan’s experienced captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nawroz-Mangal-c2084 was a ray of hope for the war-affected side who smashed nine boundaries during the 92 balls faced by him. He completed his half century as he steered his team to 165 as the middle
order kept collapsing around him. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Asghar-Stanikzai-c1094 (26 off 27 balls) was another victim of Haq who dismissed him when he tried to hit the stands with a six yet it went straight to Ross Lyons.
Mohammad Nabi, who helped his team win the silver medal at this year’s Asian Games in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/China-c40996, was taken out by Parker who only managed to take a single run off 32 balls.
Mangal was looking strong at 56 as he threatened the Scottish bowling attack to give his side a lead but the middle order and the tail-enders failed to give him the support he needed as Simon Smith caught him off Lyons delivery.
The last three wickets fell back to back as the tail-enders stood at the crease without contributing anything to the chase as Samiullah Shenwari (4 runs off 32 balls), Hamid Hassan (0 off 18 balls) and Shapoor Zadran were all out
at 171 runs.
Scotland looked in a good position as Afghanistan’s first innings came to an end with Scottish captain Gordon Drummond applauding his side’s bowlers.
Scotland started off their second innings in a confident manner as openers Fraser Watts and Preston Mommsen smashed boundaries to steer their team to 22 runs in 7 overs. Mommsen (9 runs off 23 balls) however was taken off with
a leg before as Samiullah Shenwari took his first wicket in the final match.
Watts went on to make 28 runs off 49 balls as he hit four boundaries but Shenwari took his and Scotland’s second wicket as they were on 41 runs.
Kyle Coetzer (11 runs off 48 balls) was up next and a horrible mix up with Gregor Maiden left Coetzer stranded in middle of the crease as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamid-Hassan-c1524 hit the stumps.
Maiden followed Coetzer soon to the pavilion as Shenwari took his third wicket when Coetzer scored only four runs.
The Scottish men were 55 for the loss of four wickets but the Afghani onslaught did not end here.
Scotland’s first day hero Neil McCallum, who saved his side from an otherwise embarrassing innings with his unbeaten 104 score, was ashamed himself as he was caught by Mohammad Shahzad off Hassan’s delivery for a duck facing five
balls at the crease.
Afghanistan’s bowlers found confidence as they restricted the Scottish batsmen on 55 for the loss of five wickets.
Hamid closed the day as he took his second wicket of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756’s second innings when right-handed batsman Matthew Parker (0 runs) was bowled out.
Scotland lead by 105 runs with four wickets remaining with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Berrington-c47840 (9 runs off 31 balls) at the crease.
By the end of day two, the tables looked turn as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745 is in a much stronger position to win their first ICC Intercontinental Cup.
