Claiming a crucial 4-wicket haul, medium-pacer Zia-ul-Haq played a starring role in the Pakistan Under-19s' emphatic 109-run victory over the Afghanistan Under-19s in the first match of the ongoing ICC Under-19 World Cup, 2012, played today on August 11
at the John Blanck Oval in Buderim.
Aided by half-centuries by skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Nawaz, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 U-19s posted a healthy total of 253, which their Afghan counterparts were unable to chase, courtesy Zia-ul-Haq’s 4 for 30, and Zafar Gohar’s 2 for 25.
The Afghanistan U-19s won the toss and put their opponents to bat first. Pakistan opened their innings with Sami Aslam (21) and skipper Babar Azam (75), who went on to win the Player of the Match award for his vital half-ton.
Their opening partnership yielded 49 runs, and came to an end with the dismissal of Aslam in the 14th over – caught out by Shabir Noori off Yamin Ahmadzai (10-0-54-2). However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Babar-Azam-c1122 soldiered on, establishing a 73-run stand with Imam-ul-Haq
(25), which got their side up to 122 by the 32nd over.
Imam-u-Haq was caught and bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Roger-Kirshaw-Pierson-c42135 it out at the crease till the end of the innings, remaining not out at 43. His partnership with Babar Azam was fleeting, and resulted in only 20 runs, after
which the skipper was run out by Sayed Shirzad in the 36th over.
Following his dismissal, two wickets fell in quick succession – Saad Ali (4) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Nawaz-c77155 restored the stability of the innings, contributing
an individual score of 66, in addition to teaming up with Waheed for a 6th wicket 103-run stand.
Sayed Shirzad (9-1-43-2) managed to dismiss Nawaz in the last over, but by then it was too late and Pakistan finished at 253 by the end of 50 overs, at the expense of 6 wickets.
In comparison, Afghanistan were unable to maintain much stability during their innings, and succumbed to the Pakistani bowling attack, all out, at 144 by the 46th over.
The opening stand of 36 runs between wicketkeeper batsman Afsar http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zia-ul-Haq-c98603 by the 9th over, after which Afghanistan
endured disappointing performances by Shabir Noori (5) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nasir-c78728 Ahmadzai (6).
Hashmatullah Shaidi (50) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745 found themselves
all out at 144 – 109 runs short of the target.
The victory grants the Pakistan U-19s two points, and they will be looking to continue in a similar vein in their next match, against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 Under-19s on August 13. The Afghanistan U-19s, meanwhile, will be aiming to put up a better performance as
they prepare to face off against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Under-19s on August 14.
