3-wicket hauls by Ashton Turner and Gurinder Sandhu reduced the England Under-19s to a paltry total, and a solid unbeaten 5th wicket partnership between skipper William Bosisto and Travis Head enabled the Australia Under-19s to secure a comprehensive
6-wicket win over their opponents in the second match of the ongoing ICC Under-19 World Cup, played at the Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville today on August 11.
The match kicked off with the Australia U-19s winning the toss and electing to field first – a decision which was justified by the performances of off-spinner Turner (7-0-30-3) and medium-pacer Sandhu (9.3-1-27-3). Assisted by Joel Paris (10-0-35-2) and
Mark Steketee (9-0-35-2), the two bowlers scythed through England’s batting order, with 3 batsmen dismissed on duck and the highest score being Craig Overton’s 35.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 opened their innings with Daniel Bell-Drummond (0) and Alex Davies (18), but the opening partnership was terminated in the very first over by Paris, who dismissed Bell-Drummond, lbw. His successor, Ben Foakes followed him in the very next over, sent
back to the pavilion by Steketee on 2.
Davies and Craig Overton (35) formed the joint-highest partnership on the England side – a 3rd wicket 34-run stand which got the team total up to 40 by the 12th over. However, their partnership came to an end when Davies became Steketee’s
second victim of the day, caught out by wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JM-Anderson-c1705 Peirson.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aneesh-Kapil-c44658 chipped in with a useful 14, but Sandhu did not allow him to progress further. He was followed to the crease by Ben Duckett (15) who formed England’s second 34-run partnership with Craig Overton, before being bowled by Turner in the 26th
over.
The remainder of the batting order remained lacklustre, with skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wood-c98110 and Reece Topley were both dismissed without having contributed a
single run, and England ended, all out, with a meagre final score of 143 by the 39th over.
It was a bad day for opening partnerships all around, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s Cameron Bancroft (2) and Peirson (0) fell cheaply during the Aussies' turn at bat, both dismissed by the 4th over by Topley (10-0-33-2) and Jamie Overton (8-1-34-2) – the only
two England bowlers who managed to make any dents in the Aussie batting order.
The home team gathered momentum as they moved lower down the order. Meyrick http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Buchanan-c48808 (16) and Kurtis Patterson (19) formed a 3rd wicket 21-run stand, which was followed by a 24-run partnership between Patterson and Bosisto (35*) following Buchanan’s
dismissal at the hands of Topley.
However, it was the unbeaten 93-run stand between Bosisto and Player of the Match Travis Head (who top-scored for his side with 57*) which got the team over the finish line, enabling them to reach 147 by the 36th over, with 6 wickets and 89 deliveries
remaining.
With their victory having enabled them to gain 2 match points, the Aussies will be hoping for a similar performance in their next match (due to be played against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nepal-c2965 U-19s on August 13) while England will be looking to redeem themselves in their next
game, scheduled for August 12 against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 U-19s.
