Despite the 8-wicket defeat they recently suffered at the hands of the Australia Women in their first Group A match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2012, played at the Galle International Stadium on September 27, the India Women maintained a positive
outlook, with skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mithali-Raj-c76407 insisting on the need for the team to have faith in themselves.
“One defeat doesn't mean the end of the road, we have to keep believing in ourselves,” said Raj. “We can't sulk about this, surprises do happen.”
The India Women won the toss and elected to bat first, but were unable to do justice to their decision. The opening stand between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Poonam-Ganesh-Raut-c82377 (21) yielded only 29 runs, after which both were dismissed by the 7th over.
Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur both contributed 18 runs each, in addition to setting up a 25-run stand for the 3rd wicket. However, they were unable to resuscitate their team’s innings, and the partnership came to an end with the dismissal of Raj in
the 11th over, run out by Jess Jonassen.
“Harman and I were batting really well, but we collapsed once again,” Raj said, regretting the abrupt and untimely end of the partnership.
The India Women found themselves sorely troubled by the Australian bowlers, chief among them http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Erin-Alyse-Osborne-c56181, who claimed 3 for 13, to restrict the India Women to a final total of 104 by the end of 20 overs. However, Osborne went on to credit her fellow bowlers,
claiming she had merely complemented the efforts of the other bowlers.
“I think I was just a beneficiary of some fantastic work done by the other bowlers,” said Osborne, who was declared the Player of the Match.
Meanwhile, the Australia Women faced no difficulties in chasing down the 105 run target, owing to a superb foundation laid by opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alyssa-Jean-Healy-c43856 (21), followed by a
49-run partnership with Jess Cameron (36*).
“We expect her [Lanning] to set the tone at the top of the innings. She is fearless and extremely confident, I just love watching her bat,” said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jodie-Maree-Fields-c67118.
Lanning’s superb display at the top led her side to reach 105 easily, with 8 wickets and 16 deliveries remaining. The team will be hoping to carry the same momentum into their next Group A clash, against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Women on September 29, while the India
Women will be looking to get back on track during their match against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 Women on the same date.
