Bangladesh 100 v Sri Lanka 101 - Sri Lanka Women won by 6 wickets (with 141 balls remaining)
Sri Lanka, secured their place in the next International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Cup by grabbing a win in the tournament on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Bangladesh after beating hosts Bangladesh by six wickets in the play-off match.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh chose to bat first in a bid to put pressure on their opponents by posting a daunting total on the board.
However, they were wary of Sri Lanka’s flamboyant bowling arsenal, which is probably one of the best bowling attacks in the ongoing tournament due to which they were expected to be in high moral well before this encounter.
The Lankans drew first blood when they grabbed the wicket of Bangladesh opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ayesha-Akhter-c46861 in the 5th over as she walked back to the pavilion after scoring two runs. At the time of this wicket, Bangladesh had managed to post only four runs on the board.
One delivery later, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 struck again by grabbing the wicket of number-three batswoman Farjan Hoque who had her stumps shattered before she could score a run.
Disaster struck when on 13 runs, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Suktara-c91738 got run out after playing a short innings of three runs. With three wickets down early on, Bangladesh were heading towards an ultimate doom and needed the batswomen to take charge in order to counter the bowling offensive unleashed by the Sri Lankans.
The arrival of Bangladesh skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Salma-Khatun-c88162 gave a new life to the depleting Bangladesh batting line-up as she crafted a nifty knock against their opponents to establish some potent resistance against the belligerent Sri Lankan bowlers.
Khatun was backed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rumana-Ahmed-c87106 (17) as the skipper smacked a knock of 32 runs to help the side post 100 runs on the board.
With a meagre tally on to reach, the Sri Lankans started their innings with confidence citing another great win.
Nonetheless, Sri Lanka were given a tough time as they lost four wickets on their way to a chasing a tally of 101 runs.
In the end, the Lankans won the match in 26.3 overs.
Although her team lost, Khatun was named as the Player of the Match.
