ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge, roundup of second day
On the second day of the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge, West Indies, South Africa and Sri Lanka prevailed in their scheduled fixtures of the day adding two points to their respective accounts.
In the first match of the day, Ireland’s Women faced a humiliating 165 runs defeat at the hands of tournament favourites, West Indies.
The second match of the day, played between Netherlands and Sri Lanka, was won by the Sri Lankan Women with a margin of 50 runs. The last game of the day saw the home side defeating visiting Pakistani girls by 7 wickets.
The strong West Indies side sealed a comfortable 165 runs victory over the listless Ireland at the North-West University No. 2 Ground, Potchefstroom. It was the West Indies’ second consecutive win of the tournament.
A day before the side had thwarted the Dutch women by 148 runs. It was a belligerent performance from Stafanie Taylor once again, who scored 147 off just 141 deliveries, in the tournament opener against Netherlands. Opening the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 innings, she struck
a beautiful knock of 72 runs plundering six well timed boundaries. She shared 95-runs stand with the skipper Merissa Aguilleira for the third wicket partnership.
Both the partners were sacked off consecutive deliveries in the 33rd over.
The dismissal of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Taylor-c92915 and Aguilleira was brushed off by Deandra Dottin, the first lady to record a T20 hundred, who smashed whirlwind 72 off just 59 balls and drag the side to a respectable total of 275 for 6 in the end.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 started the run chase quite reasonably with the opening pair Clare Shillington and Cecelia Joyce setting an imposing platform of 66 runs. The downhill of the Ireland innings started with the removal of the opening pair by left-arm seamer Shanel Daley,
who finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 29, from his allotted quota of 10 overs.
The rest of the cast fell for single digit scores. Ireland was ruled out by the West Indies bowler for only 110 with 9 overs to spare.
The pugnacious opener, Stafanie Taylor, had also come to the fore with the ball, nipping out two wickets giving away only 15 runs in his spell of 10 overs. Anisa Mohammad returned with 3 for 13 from 7 overs.
The second match of the day played between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 saw the former opening their account in the ICC Women’s Cricket Challenge with a comfortable 50-run win over Dutch side at the North-West University No.1 Ground in Potchefstroom.
Shashikala Siriwardene, the Sri Lankan skipper opted to bat first after winning the toss. Her decision was duly justified by a solid start from the watchful opener Hiruka Fernando and a belligerent innings by the No. 3 batsman Suwini de Alwis, who top-scored
with 73 runs laced with nine muscular boundaries.
The side seemed to lose its way towards the end of the innings but Sandamali Dolawatta steadied things with an unbeaten knock of 48 runs. Dolawatta’s 61-ball stay at the crease saw her hitting a single boundary in her innings but kept plundering runs at
a good pace. At the end of the allotted 50-overs Sri Lanka amassed 245 runs at the loss of 8 wickets, which proved more than adequate to bag them a victory.
In reply, Captain Helmien Rambaldo’s 67 was not enough to avoid a second consecutive defeat as the knock failed to get support from rest of the cast. Only Violet Wattenberg and Annemarie Tanke could manage to get past 25, but both the players scythed for
scores less than 32, while the rest of the cast fell for the scores below 20.
In the last match of the day, the hosts, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 by 7 wickets. The meagre total of 123 runs mustered by the visitors from 40.3 overs was easily chased by the strong South African line up on the first ball off the 31st over
with seven wickets still intact.
