ICC World Cup, 2011: West Indies mull replacement for injure duo Baugh, Barath
As the West Indian captain Darren Sammy made an entrance into the Bangabandhu stadium in a cycle-rickshaw during the opening ceremony of the ICC World Cup, 2011, he was possibly mulling a replacement for the injured duo of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Barath-c42094.
Opener Barath and wicketkeeper Baugh have been sidelined for up to three weeks after tweaking their hamstring muscles. The World Cup debutants are set to miss the start of the mega tournament and could return home if they fail to recover in time.
While there are others in the squad who can replace Barath, there is no replacement for wicket-keeper Baugh who was called into the team after a string of impressive performances in the One Day International format.
“Both players are struggling with hamstring injuries and had scans. The outlook is not good. However both travelled with the team from Colombo. If replacements are required they will be named in the next few days,” a http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 media spokesperson told media
in Dhaka.
Baugh took part in the warm up tie against co-hosts Sri Lanka but was left ruing his injuries. He scored 29 runs before retiring out, handing over the gloves to batsman Darren Bravo as the hosts chased down a stiff victory target of 286 runs. Barath did
not take part in that game.
Barath was set to open the innings with the flamboyant Chris Gayle; his injury is a big blow for the West Indies. The right-handed opener has shown real promise at the top of the innings and has been tipped as one of the brightest
batting talents in the game. He scored a hundred on his test match debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in a recently concluded ODI tour at Colombo.
The West Indies Cricket Board had included the duo of Kirk Edwards and wicketkeeper Devon Thomas as reserves for the tournament. If Barath and Baugh fail to recover in time the two would get the nod and be flown in to the Subcontinent.
The West Indies won the first two World Cup tournaments in 1975 and 1979 and have been on a downward spiral ever since. The last time that they made it to the semi-finals was in 1996.
