With the ICC World Cup 2011 set to kick off in the Subcontinent on 19 February, gambling in the world is all set to reach new heights.
According to a recent report, an anonymous gambler has struck a $ 132,300 bet on India’s victory in the mega event with a London-based bookmaker.
According to reports, this is the highest bet ever laid on the outcome of a One Day International game.
“It's one of the biggest bets ever. We've even more reason now to fear an India win,” said a spokesman for a betting company.
Bookies are expected to make big money through the cricket World Cup. There are many countries where betting is legal therefore no action against the gamblers would be taken as long as they do not influence the players to change the outcome of the match
in their favour.
It is believed that the punter will collect $ 396,900 if India win the final scheduled for 2 April.
In India, the bookies are all set to make the money of their lifetime as they look to avoid any action by the police that may hinder their lucrative business.
Most of the bookies are said to have relocated to other areas so that they could get out of the radars of the law enforcement agencies. Agencies these days are equipped with phone tracking gadgets which makes it easy for them to locate and arrest the bookies.
According to reports, the underworld is in full swing to make money from the sporting event like it did on many previous occasions as well.
According to one estimate, the total income made through gambling on all the matches of the World Cup would be higher than India’s defence budget.
Estimated betting rates of each match in the group stage are from Rs 1,500 to Rs 20,000 million. For the knockout stage, the rates could shoot up to Rs 40,000 million per match.
With betting going on a rampage, International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit will surely have to work overtime in order to keep the event a corruption free affair.
