ICC World Cup 2011: Ed Rainsford ruled out due to ankle injury
Ed Rainsford became the third Zimbabwe player to be ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2011 after he twisted his ankle during a practice session.
Rainsford’s injury is a big blow for his team with only days to go before cricket’s flagship event gets underway on 19 February. He leads the bowling attack and sets a decent tone for his backup bowlers and his services will be severely missed by Zimbabwe.
Rainsford has been performing well for the Zimbabweans in limited overs cricket, picking up 45 wickets at an average of 31 from 39 One Day Internationals. His tally of wickets includes a best performance of 5 for 36.
Rainsford has been replaced by another fast-medium bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757.
Panyangara is being considered as a possible threat for the opposition batsmen. He is a surprise package, and can prove beneficial for his team with his variations on the slow wickets of the Subcontinent.
From 23 matches, the right-arm bowler has grabbed 26 victims at an average of 36 with a best of 3 for 28. He came into the limelight during the Under-19 World Cup in 2003-04 where he surprised http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 with a match-winning spell of 6 for 31.
He was inducted into the national side quite early after 15 rebel players were sacked by Zimbabwe Cricket in 2004. He made his debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 at Harare in the same year but could only play for another year before being ruled out of the game due
to a stress fracture in the back.
Once again, it will be a great opportunity for the 25-year-old to cement his place in the national squad by putting up some quality performances in cricket’s flagship event.
Zimbabwe will play their first World Cup match against Australia on 21 February at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad.
