ICC World Cup 2011: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tasmania-c854 captain George Bailey slams decision to drop Xavier Doherty
Tasmanian captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Bailey-c1480 slammed the Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch and his selection panel for overlooking fellow player Xavier Doherty in the World Cup squad.
Bailey said that Doherty has been “basically shafted” by the national selectors ahead of the announcement of the 15-man squad for the coveted cricket event.
The slow left-arm orthodox bowler was dropped in favour of the ousted Test spinner, Nathan Hauritz despite the selectors exuding confidence in the young Tasmanian spinner.
His captain Bailey stated that he feels extremely frustrated for the 28-year-old bowler, given his domestic one-day form in the 2010-11 season.
“It’s hard to know what to tell Xavier, his performances speak for themselves. They’re outstanding and have been for two or three years,” he said.
Bailey reckoned that he had more wickets in the domestic one-day form of cricket in 2010-11 season and has been more economical, yet the decision of the selectors has left him flabbergasted.
“He’s clearly http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746’s best performed one-day spinner, domestically and has obviously performed really well in the few chances he had with the national team,” the right-handed batsman said.
Bailey questioned the Australian selectors’ decision and demanded an explanation for not picking a second spinner along with Hauritz. He said that the World Cup will be held in the sub-continent which makes it easier for spinners to succeed.
The tenth World Cup will start from 19 February, 2011 and will be jointly hosted by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750. All of the three countries are known for producing spin-friendly wickets.
Doherty was recently included in the first One Day International squad of Australia against England at Melbourne that saw the Aussies winning by six wickets. However, Doherty went wicket-less with figures of 0-40 from seven overs.
Bailey said that even though the young spinner did not have his best game at Melbourne, he deserves a second chance as he would have complemented Hauritz.
He also lamented the selectors’ way of confusing the young players by not telling them what to do for improvement. He said that there are encouraging statements from the selectors ahead of the squad’s announcement but once they are dropped, there is no communication on part of the selectors.
