ICC World Cup 2011: Wankhede Stadium to have another inspection
India’s ambitions for hosting a smooth ICC World Cup 2011 seem to be in shambles after Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai failed its initial inspection by the fire department experts.
The stadium is set to host the final match of the tournament. According to reports, the stadium lacked water hydrants, no-smoking indicators, fire alarms and extinguishers.
Speaking on the issue, the chief fire officer Uday Tatkare said, “The team has found that the newly renovated stadium has many loopholes in its fire safety mechanism. The stadium must be in compliance with the fire safety conditions.”
Tatkare disclosed that a second inspection would take place soon. He reiterated that the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Cricket Association had been instructed to comply with the fire safety rules and regulations.
Two matches are scheduled to be played in the tainted stadium before the final. The first match on 13 March will be played between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/March-c74391, the Black Caps will take on Sri Lanka at the same venue. The final of the mega
event will be played on 2 April.
Cricketing authorities look upbeat and confident to meet the standards of the fire department and are hopeful that the stadium will get a green light after its second inspection by the relevant authorities.
This news has come just a few weeks after the decision by the International Cricket Council to strip Kolkata’s Eden Gardens from hosting a World Cup match due to unsatisfactory preparations. England were to play their opening match at the venue and the game
has now been shifted to Nagpur.
The ICC World Cup 2011 is set to begin from 19 February when India take on Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.
