ICC accords with BCCI on UDRS technology
The Board for Control of Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, chief executive International Cricket Council, admits that the system is not infallible and there are still
some technical issues which need to be sorted out.
Lorgat believes that it will take some time for full implementation of the system but clarified that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 is content with the system and its cricket committee has suggested its use in all Test matches.
The chief executive further expressed that so far it is simply a suggestion and the final decision will be made by ICC board.
Haroon Lorgat said, “The UDRS helps to remove errors and allows the game to proceed without a blatant error. At present there are practical issues with the availability of technology and hence it is up to the respective Member Boards to decide if they wish
to use DRS in any given series.”
Lorgat also expressed his belief that umpiring standards have risen allot in the past couple of years. He praised the performance of elite umpires all around the globe but concludes that despite restless efforts, slip-ups do occur and it is where the system
comes in handy.
According to the chief executive, the accuracy of decisions has further improved by the induction of the Umpires Decision Review System. As compared to the previous value of 92 percent, the percentage of accurate decisions has gone up to 97 percent after
the system’s implementation.
"We are very satisfied with the way UDRS, which is pioneering technology, has progressed. No one doubts that it has helped to raise the percentage of correct decisions. But crucially it has removed the obvious umpiring errors,” said Lorgat.
The Indian team is currently on the tour of West Indies. According to ICC rules, when two countries face each other, the decision to use UDRS lies with home team.
