ICC approval not mandatory for Pak-http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 Series-Cricket News update
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 announced on March 6, 2012, that neither the Pakistan Cricket Board nor its Bengali counterpart require any form of approval for holding a series against each other. It appears that the statement is meant to justify their
decision regarding the appointment of cricket officials for the matches.
The ICC had made it clear that its role was to ensure the safety and security of match officials for international games. As such, it does not carry any power or responsibility to give consent or approval, regarding international
level matches.
The ICC communicated its stand in clear terms via a statement issued from Dubai. It said: “At the January 31-February 1 meeting of the ICC Executive Board in Dubai, which was attended by the Bangladesh and Pakistan cricket board chiefs,
it was determined that the ICC’s role is to consider the security for match officials. Therefore, under that ruling ICC has no role in agreeing or approving the security of a bilateral tour”.
As ICC is the governing body of cricket, the PCB and the BCB wanted to seek the security assessment for hosting a series in Pakistan. The aim was to seek approval for the bilateral competition between the two nations.
According to ICC representatives, the responsibility of arranging international level matches lies with the respective cricketing authorities of the concerned countries. The role of the governing body is restricted to appointing and
providing match officials to oversee the matches.
The PCB and BCB authorities fear that the ICC could upset them by making an unfavourable decision regarding the appointment of match officials, which would adversely affect the authenticity of the series, and dampen international
support for the revival of cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
International cricket remains suspended in Pakistan since the attack on the visiting Sri Lankan team in Lahore in 2009. This has negatively affected Pakistan’s image at the international level, making Pakistani territory out of bounds
for international level matches.
The decision rests with the ICC officials now to lend support by appointing its representatives for the series in Pakistan.
