ICC chief Lorgat denies bias in D/L system v VJD method decision – Cricket News Update
Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, has defended the governing body’s decision to retain the Duckworth-Lewis method in favour of the VJD method proposed by an Indian engineer, terming former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar’s
criticism of the ICC’s verdict as “not healthy”.
“It is not a healthy situation ... when the former chairman has such a critical view of how it was handled,” Lorgat said.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kerala-c803, proposed an alternative to the Duckworth-Lewis method currently in use for calculating revised targets when limited-overs matches are interrupted due to rain.
The D/L rule was devised by English statisticians Frank Duckworth and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013. The ICC adopted it in 2001 as the standard method for resetting targets
in cases of play being interrupted by rain.
Jayadevan sent details regarding his method, which has been used in all Indian domestic matches (except the Indian Premier League) since 2007, to the ICC, stressing that it was a significant improvement over the established system. His method also received
support from Gavaskar.
The proposed system was reviewed by the ICC’s Cricket Committee, which comprises 16 members – among them Lorgat, Sharad Pawar, former captains http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ranjan-Senerath-Madugalle-c83994, senior
umpire http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clive-Hubert-Lloyd-c51327, rejected the new method, claiming it offered no significant improvements over the D/L, which was completely efficient.
Jayadevan accused the committee of bias, and wrote to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 should have tried the Jayadevan method for a year, like they do with
trial laws, and then decided.”
However, Lorgat has denied all possibility of bias, clarifying that the system was rejected purely on grounds of its inability to offer anything new.
“With respect to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Manohar-Gavaskar-c91863, I was present at the meeting [of the Cricket Committee], the president of the ICC was present and the process was proper, fair and transparent,” he said. “Let's not forget Duckworth-Lewis is a tried and tested method and
to radically change something, you need something that is radically different and makes substantial sense.”
