ICC committee recommends the use of DRS in all formats of the game
After its two-day meeting at Lord’s, the International Cricket Council (ICC) committee has come up with recommendations to introduce the Decision Review System (DRS) in all three formats of the game in order to make the umpires’ job easy and on-field decisions
fair.
The committee, headed by the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 captain, Clive Lloyd, deliberated on a number of other issues like Floodlight Tests and the ODI format.
Talking to the media here on today, Clive said, “The committee’s recommendation that the DRS should be used in all formats of the game confirms two key conclusions that came from our discussions.”
Currently, the DRS is optional in Test and ODI matches while it is not used in T20 games. The ICC wants to make it compulsory in all three formats.
The DRS was introduced for the first time in international cricket in October 2009 and was used successfully in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
Clive further said, “It shows the group’s confidence in the system and it also highlights the committee’s view that it does aid the umpires in making correct decisions.”
The DRS has drawn massive criticism and India is at the top in this regard. The critics termed the technology to be flawed.
During the World Cup, there were some occasions where the DRS allegedly went wrong. The Indian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820, is a vocal opponent of the system.
However, the ICC General Manager, David http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 board will take cognisance of that.”
He further elaborated, “We need consistency. It confuses the players and viewers if one series has DRS and the other not. Let us use it in every series possible.”
Meanwhile, the ICC Chief, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, has claimed that the DRS has increased the ratio of correct decisions by 7 percent.
The Committee has forwarded its recommendations to the council high authorities for approval.
Despite the controversies and disputes DRS has created, it is a marvellous innovation that has revolutionized the game.
