ICC expands 2014 World Twenty20 Cup – Cricket News Update
The International Cricket Council has decided to expand the 2014 World T20 Cup held in Bangladesh, which will see 16 participants in the competition, as opposed to the current 12.
“What excites me is the decision to extend the World Twenty20 event, which takes place in 2014 in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719.
The ICC, during its annual meeting of the general body on Sunday in Dubai, has approved recommendations presented by the Chief Executive Committee, foremost of which include the addition of associate and affiliate member countries in the next mega event.
The new step will see six qualifying non-member teams, showcasing their talent against the cricketing elites.
"The board's decision to increase the number of participating teams must be comforting to all the associate and affiliate countries. I’m sure that is very comforting to all associates and affiliates…it provides them with a greater chance of competing on
the global stage,” said the 51-year-old chief.
As per ICC’s current guidelines, each team is permitted to play maximum of 12 Twenty20 matches in any given year. However, after the addition of six more teams, it is expected that the volume of T20s will increase to 15 in 2014, provided there is a reduction
in the number of ODIs played in that particular year.
"The need to manage volume of cricket was considered when agreeing to allow the additional T20Is to be played in a year,” said Lorgat.
The board meeting also finalized UAE as the venue for the ICC’s World Twenty20 2014 qualifiers, following the successful staging of this year’s qualifying round. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 qualifiers however, will be held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754.
A constitutional amendment has also been made by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625, wherein the presidential post is redefined and a new post of chairman is created. If the amendment is approved by the ICC’s general body, chairman will be in supreme authority, while the president’s
role will be turned into a purely commercial one - further leading to the abolishment of the vice-president’s post.
