ICC recommends Umpire Decision Review System in all International Fixtures
The cricket committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC) has forwarded a recommendation asking for the enforcement of the controversial Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) in all international matches.
The committee insisted that the teams be allowed one challenge per innings as opposed to the current two challenge option in One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 games.
As of now, the UDRS cannot be enforced in a series unless both the teams agree on using the system. Nonetheless, it is the sole responsibility of the home side to have the final say regarding the use of the system.
The UDRS has become increasingly controversial after its authenticity and accuracy was challenged by the current world champions, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, in this year’s ICC World Cup 2011, where the Indians showed disappointment over the technology in their match against
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, which ended in a draw.
Indian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahendra-Singh-Dhoni-c73820, questioned the use of the technology after Ian Bell was not given leg-before wicket when in the video replays it was evident that the ball was going on to hit the stumps.
However, the player was saved by the use of UDRS, which irritated the hosts. It needs to be noted that India has been against the system ever since its inception in the world of cricket.
While on the other hand, many other countries have welcomed the inclusion of the new technology in the sport and feel that it has helped in making the life of the on-field umpires easier.
However, the ICC believes that they will convince the Indians to tone down their opposition towards the enforcement of the system in all international tournaments.
Talking on the matter, the ICC’s General Manager of cricket, Dave http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richardson-c85395, said, “The level of believability in ball-tracking systems has improved. Hopefully, member boards and the India board will take cognizance of that. We hope the decision is influential
in that regard".
The recommendations will now have to be submitted to the ICC’s chief executives’ committee and the main board of approval next month, where the final decision on the implementation of the system will be taken.
