ICC refuses to allow fourth match at Eden Gardens
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has disallowed Indian authorities from hosting a fourth match at under-construction cricket ground, Eden Gardens, during the World Cup 2011.
The Cricket Association of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bengal-c771 (CAB) had asked the ICC to allow it to host a match featuring the Indian team, but the request has been denied. An England-India match was initially scheduled to be played at Eden Gardens on February 27, but has been relocated
due to ill-preparations.
As recompense for the loss of the England-India match, the CAB asked the ICC to transfer a March 6 match between India and Ireland from Bangalore to Kolkata as the England-India game had been relocated to Bangalore. The CAB also assured the ICC that the
stadium would be ready by then.
However, ICC CEO http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719 quashed the plea, saying that it would craft logistical problems. He added that it was enormously difficult to shift all the logistical equipment in such a short time.
Previously, CAB Joint Secretary Biswarup Dey had said that shifting the match on March 6 to Kolkata from Bangalore will compensate the local cricket fans and give them a chance to see their home team in action in their city. “I think losing the England-India
tie has been punishment enough. The cricket-loving people of Kolkata don’t deserve to be punished any further. The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750-Ireland tie would be somewhat, a compensation,” Dey said.
Earlier, the venue had been excluded from the list of venues for the World Cup 2011 as the stadium had not been complete by the ICC’s deadline of January 31. An inspection team visited the site and according to its report Eden Gardens would not be available
for matches before March. Therefore, the ICC decided to relocate the England-India match and restore the stadium’s host status for three matches scheduled in March.
The ICC inspection team will visit the stadium again on February 14 and 22 to check on the progress of the construction work before an official permission is given to the ground to host the three matches in March.
The venue is to host matches between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752 on March 20.
