The International Cricket Council’s umpires and referees manager, Vince http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Billy-Raymond-Doctrove-c48096 on behalf of the organisation, after the international umpire decided to retire following 14 years of service.
“Billy has been an excellent servant of the game and we thank him on behalf of the entire cricket fraternity for his outstanding contribution as an international umpire for 14 years,” Bijl said.
Doctrove started his career by playing club cricket for Dominica, but shifted to football, which he claimed was one of his prime passions. He served as FIFA’s first Dominican referee from 1995 to 1997, after which he decided to focus all his energies on
umpiring for cricket matches.
His ODI debut came in 1998, when he stood in a match between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in Antigua.
He was promoted to the international panel in 2004 and to the Elite Panel in 2006. Throughout his 14-year-long career, he stood in 38 Tests, 112 ODIs and 17 T20Is.
 “To have remained as one of the game's top officials for that length of time has required Billy to be self-motivated, confident and well respected,” Bijl observed.
Doctrove’s career was unmarred by any scandals save one – he, along with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Darrell-Bruce-Hair-c52421, served as umpire in the controversial 2006 Oval Test between Pakistan and England, during which Pakistan had refused to take the field after tea, in protest to the ball-tampering
allegations against them.
The 56-year-old, who last stood in a match earlier this year in March (the second Test between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 and Pakistan, but pulled out
owing to family reasons.
Bijl commented, not just on Doctrove’s services as umpire, but also on his character, terming him a wonderful personality.
“Billy is a very special man, with strong values, firm beliefs yet with an underlying gentleness and humour, and a great family man - a wonderful blend.”
