hi

i am looking for a good pair of ice skates for recreational use. I am a girl and go once a week. Do you guys think i shouldd buy a pair of skates or just continue to rent. The instuctors at the rink told me to get a pair of my own as soon as possible. What do you all think? What brand?

  1. It's probably best to always have your own pair.  If you continue to skate, you'll save yourself money in the long run and you always know how the skates are going to fit.  You always know you'll get the right size, skates with good ankle support, laces that aren't all messed up and blades that were sharpened properly and more recently than rentals.  The biggest bonus -- you know who had their feet in them before you!  :)

If you're taking lessons, you're going to want a better skate than what you'd find at Dunham's, Sports Authority, Target or Toys 'R Us.  I'd suggest going to your local skate shop where they have some experience with skates and get fitted for Riedells or Jacksons.  The two brands have better quality recreational skates with more ankle support, better blades and better quality materials.  Of course with that, they're going to cost more than Lake Placids or CCMs....skates made for a few laps around the pond or rink.  Tell them what level you're skating, what your plans/goals are (spins/jumps or just frequent recreational skating).  They will be able to give you a model recommendation and fit your foot properly for size and width.  If you at least know which brand/model and size/width you're looking for, you can bargan hunt on the internet, and when you get them, you'll know if they will fit properly or cause problems because skates do not always run true to shoe sizes.

    Good luck!

  2. If you only skate once a week it's not necessarly to break the bank but you probably don't want the cheapest skates out there.  Head to a skating shop or a decent sports store and see what they recommend for your needs.

Depending how much renting skates are at your rink and if you keep up skating for a while it might be worth it to own your own.  It'd probably help your skating too.

  3. Getting your own pair of skates is a good idea since rental skates aren't the best skates around. I think that a pair of Riedell Blue ribbon skates would be a good pair for you. I would suggest going to your local pro shop so you can be properly sized for the skates. A decent pair of skates will cost you around $100-$150. Good luck!

take a look at this boot/blade, also, look at the reidell skate guide for help.

Jackson skates are also good beginner skates. Does your rink have a pro shop? If it does, they can probably give you more personal feedback

  5. This is how it starts:  you go once a week, then you realize you need your own skates, then you want to skate more, then you need even better skates so you can nail those jumps and spins...welcome to the world of skating!  It's addicting.

Definitely get your own.  Some good beginner skates are Riedells or Jacksons.  If you buy from your local pro shop, most will throw in any adustments or blade mounting you need.  Don't be tempted by internet deals because you really need someone to fit it to your foot! You can't go by your regular shoe size.
