IDE HD Not Detected

From one boot to the next my XP fails to detect my hard drive as Primary Master. My HD is now listed as IDE Third Master.I have not changed anything.Went into BIOS - everything set to auto-detect but still will not recognize my HD as Master. The setup is about 8 months old.
