People think Jeter is some kind of incredible player.Cmon he is good but by no means is he as good as the status he is given.Put him in a small organization and he would barely be discussed. When I see Shortstops like Hanlet Ramerez get less talk than Jeter it makes me Barf.I am not a Red Sox fan but I just wish some of these phenominal players in smaller markets would get the recognition they deserve. How many players can you name in any sport that dont get the recognition they deserve?Jason Bay just went through this.Everybody but those who follow baseball thought he was a scrub.

  1. if Jeter did play for Pittsburgh, they would trade him anyway, so it wouldn't matter!!!!!!!

  2. You are correct. He's an average Major League shortstop who was drafted by the Yankees. Location is his best friend. I believe the Yankees would have won all those World Series without him.

  3. Can we change the question a little bit?  It's hard to imagine a player as good as Jeter playing his whole career for the Pirates, who are too cheap or inept to hold on to their best players.  Can we change it to the Astros?  They're a team that doesn't get much national attention, even when they win.

If we change it to the Astros, we can compare Jeter to Craig Biggio.  They're very similar players.  Biggio and Jeter are probably in the top-10 all-time at their respective positions, but not top-5.  Biggio, like Jeter, did everything well - hit for average, hit for power, get on base, play defense, run - but didn't really stand out among the league leaders in any of those areas.  Biggio played hard, generally stayed off the DL, and was a fan favorite, just like Jeter.

I think if Jeter played his whole career with a small- or mid-market team like the Astros, he'd have roughly the same reputation as Biggio - recognized by hardcore baseball fans as a great player, and beloved by his team's fans, but fairly obscure to casual fans and non-fans.

  4. Jeter is a great player who happens to play in a big market team and were at their very best when he came up. If he was on a small club he would still be an all-star and would still have great numbers at the end of his career to be a first ballot hall of famer. He gets more attention because he plays for the Yankees. Yes he's not having his typical year but that happens to everybody, but he's getting hot right now which is great for the Yankees to make the playoffs. He's made great plays when it counts and has intangibles that other players don't have.

  5. no if he played in pittsburgh he would not have the aura that you have when you say his name he would still be equally great a player. He set the standards for shortstops in the future all these young shortstops(hanley ramirez, jose reyes, troy tulowitki)they all idolize jeter shortstop use to be a position for defense and if you got any production out of it you would be happy. Now maybe not defensively but when jeter retires he will be in the top 5 for shortstops offensively.

Now for the reason why people think he is played out to be sum sort of legend were he isn't is very false. He is the anchor main Peace of the Yankee Dynasty,in the biggest city and biggest media market in the world. The captain of the most prestigious Team in sports.

Now you are right he wouldn't be the derek jeter of today if he played for the pirates and never made the playoffs but that is just because when you are in a small market you dont get the recognition you deserve, albert pujols is great player but imagine if he played in new york he would be the god of baseball.

Now you have to respect jeter because if there is no Derek jeter there is no hanley rameriz

  6. Wel first of all, i never thought Bay was a scrub.  I thought he had potential to be something really good when he had a huge year two years ago.  A 5-tooled player.  But you're right, that a lotta small market teams have their own players hidden in the shadows of the giant tycoons.

Hanley Ramirez of course is better than Jeter and no one in their rite mind would take Jeter rite now over Han Ram, but Jeter is more popular.  But then you ask, how far does popularity get you?  Han Ran is still oiling up the bat every nite and producing.  Jeters the one that have actually seen a significant dip in his numbers.  If i was Han Ran, i would be glad the things are the way they are.

  7. I agree i am a yankee fan and i think jeter is not a good batter he hasn't even hit ten homers this year. he is the most overrated in history. He is a show off and a bad fielder he misses first base a lot and he can never do a simple play. He is a horrible captain and he should've taken one for the team and moved to a different position and let arod be shortstop again. jeter costs too much and jeter should be traded.

  8. who is dereck? never heard of him dummy! derek jeter would be great anywhere he played!

  9. If Jeter was as good as Yankee fans think, he wouldn't be sucking it up this year. Baseball IS a team sport, but every player has individual stats. Jeter's stats suck this year. Don't tell me he's having an off year either. Just ask Yankee fan...Jeter is the best player ever...ok, then why are his stats horrible this year? Arod's stats are great, but the Yanks are still behind Boston for the wild card. If he played for Pittsburgh, you would know who he was, but obviously he would have not led them to ANY championships.

  10. spell his name right first..... and no he is the greatest player to ever play the the game plus he might bat .500 in the weak NL

  11. I'm not a Yankee fan or Red Sox, actually NL fan. In Pittsburgh or Cincinnati or even Washington, the teams would be built around Jeter because of his leadership and how he plays the game.  He is one of the active players who for sure will reach the 3000 hits and you don't do that just because you are with the Yankees. His number will be retired and he will be in the HOF not because of being a Yankee but because of how he played and who he impacted while leading the team. In Pittsburgh he would be compared to Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell and their team would be great.

  12. thats just the way yankee players are. their players get all the credit, jeter is just an ok player.

  13. yea

  14. jeter makes plays and he makes them everytime

people think Hanley Ramirez is so great because he hits HRs, when he might be one of the worst defensive shortstops in the league (i know peopel dont agree with that but its true) his career FLDG percentage is only around .960 when the elite defensive shortstops (like Jeter) are around .980 for their careers

people who watch as casual fans now think the SS is a power hitting position, as is 2B. that is not the case, and guys like Soriano, and ARod set that mark. those positions are meant for the guys who hit for average, get on base, score runs and make defensive plays

Jeter is one of the best defensive shortstops since Ozzie Smith, and he gets so much credit in NY because he is clutch, one of if not THE most clutch player to ever play the game. if he was in pittsburgh he would be playing jsut as well, but how clutch can you be for a losing team?? in NY he got his chance to shine and took advantage of it. and Jason Bay did get his recognition, he was RoY a few years back in Pitsburgh, and you expect people who dont follow baseball to know Bay is good?? thats why they dont follow baseball and dont know these things

I think casual fans put too much emphasis on offense and forget that defense wins championships (Jeter knows that)

Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla aren't going to win a World Series hitting HRs but not making plays in the field

  15. this is going to stir up an arguement. but to answer your question.... yes, derek jeter would be known as a solid shortstop that plays the game hard while putting up decent numbers if he played for pittsburgh- nothing incredible.

as for jason bay- you're right. within 2 years he'll be the best thing since sliced bread, and all he's gotta do is put up the same numbers in boston he did in pittsburgh.

  16. That is the advantage of being in a heavily publicized market. Any talent at all and the media goes ape. So what do you suggest as a method of determining who are the better players ? Someone has to come to bat. In this case it is the New York media.

  17. everything he ever did ever would be 100 times less significant.  An amazing play for a shortstop anywhere but the yankees would maybe make play of the week, but if Jeter gets a ground ball its play of the century.  He is overrated at the plate, and his defense is nothing to be proud of.  I dont know why he ever gets any commotion, let alone that freaking paycheck.

  18. It's Derek by the way and shhhh, you may get some Yankee fans thinking.

Of course, outside of the Yankee Marketing machine, Jeter would be "Good bat, little power, ok speed, poor glove" type of player.

You have fans thinking of him as a 'great leader', but if it was someone else in there for 4 WS, they would think the same thing as well.

Why, with a superior team has this 'great' leader not brought a WS to NY in 8 years.

Perhaps the fist pumps don't play that big of a part.

But honestly, some Yankee fans have to pump up their players because if they take an objective look, they won't stand out in a crowd.

  19. He does get to much fame just because he is with the Yankees your right if he was with the Pirates he wouldn't be famous. He is cheap look at his stats this SEASON.

  20. Jeter is the most clutch player today - a definite Hall of Famer. But if he was playing for the Pirates his whole career, he would not be remotely as famous as he is. In fact, if he had been playing for the Pirates, he would eventually end up on the Yankees anyway, so he's about where he'd be no matter where he started (and I hate the Yankees)

  21. Jeter is not "just an ok player."  He would be an all-star no matter where he plays.  As iconic? No. Take pinstripes off of any player in history and they become less iconic.  Jeter is an amazing player. He hits well and fields his position well.  He is leader with character.  When is the last time you saw negative Jeter news?  Any team would welcome him aboard. Even the teams that already have great short stops.
