  1. (This answer assumes you are located in the US)

In most areas you will instantly get more programs in better quality. But there are some remote areas that still have limited or no digital broadcasting.

There is nothing you can harm by hooking it up, so go ahead and try. It's a good idea since most of the converter boxes only have a 3 month warranty. Like any electronics, it's a good idea to run the heck out of it at first so that if it does fail, it will probably do so during the warranty (or better yet, the store's return period!)

Plus you can see if your current antenna is good enough for your local DTV signals.

You can find out how close your local TV transmitters are at the first link below. The Yahoo TV section can tell you what your local digital programing is.

  2. If you live in an area that gets good tv signals now, you should be able to get most or all the stations you already get, plus additional channels that are already broadcast digitally.  For example, I now can get a weather channel, more public broadcasting - that sort of thing.  When I hooked my converter up, I found I had problems getting 2 channels that I could get before.   If you have this problem, you may have to go out and get a new antenna, but you can try a cheap "rabbit ears" indoor antenna and see if that works.  It did for me.
