IFFHS Declares Gianluigi Buffon the Best Goalkeeper in 25 Years (Part 2)
6. José Luis Félix Chilavert González (San Lorenzo, Real Zaragoza, Vélez Sársfield and Paraguay):
The much-travelled Paraguay legend is the best goalkeeper in Paraguayan history. Chilavert played at Velez Sarsfield for almost a decade from 1991 to 2000 and scored a spectacular 48 goals in 341 appearances for the Argentine club. 48 goals for a goalkeeper is a majestic return, his record is unlikely to be ever broken. Chilavert won IFFHS' World's Best Goalkeeper award in 1995, 1997 and 1998.
7. Andoni Zubizarreta Urreta (Athletic Bilbao, FC Barcelona, Valencia and Spain):
Andoni Zubizarreta is the all-time most capped player for the Spanish national team. The custodian had some fruitful spells with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia. Although, the Spanish legend couldn’t win many individual titles but his form made sure that Barcelona won consecutive La Liga titles from 1991 to 1994. The legend is currently acting as Barcelona’s director of football.
8. Walter Zenga (Inter Milan and Italy):
IFFHS ranks this Inter Milan and Azzurri legend at number 8 in their list. In his days, Zenga was able to retain Azzurri's number one jersey. The player couldn’t win much with his club but his sublime form won him Serie A Footballer of the Year in 1987, UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year in 1990 and IFFHS' World's Best Goalkeeper award for three consecutive years from 1989 to 1991.
9. Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel (Parma FC, Atlético Mineiro, Galatasaray and Brazil):
Claudio Taffarel is a Brazilian goalkeeper who kept gloves for his club and country between 1985 and 2003. He won little individual accolades during his career but the Brazilian number one won the 1994 FIFA World Cup and 1989 Copa America with Selecao.
10. Michel Georges Jean Ghislain Preud’Homme (Standard Liège, Mechelen, Benfia and Belgium):
This former Mechelen legend is one of the best players in Belgian history. Michel’s outings at the 1994 World Cup were of such calibre that he won the Yashin award even though Belgium failed to qualify for the final. Michel also won the IFFHS' World's Best Goalkeeper award and UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year title in 1994. Michel Preud'homme is currently the manager of reigning Dutch Champions, FC Twente.
