I owe money for some reason because it says "Need Withholding Support." Now where would I find that info on my taxes so I can send it back in and not owe money?

This is my 2nd time doing my own taxes...so please be kind.

  1. Well this would depend on the nature of the "withholding" that you claimed on the original return.  Normally this information is found on forms that report your income, for example box 17 of a W-2 form shows the state withholding.  There are about twenty different forms that may show withholding amounts in addition to estimated payments that could have been made.  What they are looking for is some evidence that the withholding payments you claimed were made.

  2. Did you claim too many W-4 allowances (or exempt) or owe a bunch of tax at filing time due to 1099 income?

If you owed more than $500 to the state when you filed, you should have revised your state IL-W-4 (for W-2 income) or been filing IL-1040-ES quarterly. http://www.revenue.state.il.us/TaxForms/...

If you did not do that, maybe they are trying to determine why not enough was withheld, and whether you should be subject to underwithholding penalty.  But they might simply want to verify claimed withholding with your W-2 (or if any was withheld on 1099's).

Similarly if you owed more than $1000 to the IRS you should be filing federal 1040-ES quarterly (or revise your W-4 if W-2 income).
